Starting at 6:45 am ET, Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee, Grace McCallum and Jordan Chiles will compete for their third consecutive Olympic gold medal in the team competition. While the United States is the favorite for the gold medal, the encounter has the potential to be a fingernail bite. Why? In the final, each country presents three gymnasts and all three scores count. Thus, a major mistake could make a team disappear completely.

The United States team is stepping up
With Biles out of the competition, Team USA showed nerves of steel on bars, with three hitting routines. McCallum led the way with a nearly blocked exit, and then Jordan Chiles, the last-minute substitute for Biles, put in his own clean performance. Finally, Sunisa Lee absolutely changed her routine, with a whopping 15,400. –Amy Van Deusen
Redemption for Jordan Chiles 🇺🇸! Called in at the last minute to replace Simone Biles on uneven bars, she delivered a huge set to the Americans at a time when they needed it badly. Beautifully strike his pike Tkachev to Pak and stick his descent! # Tokyo2020 #Artistic Gymnastics

Simone out of the team final
A Safe and Simone Biles Night has ended. Afterward, she sat down with the American coach and shook her head, saying “I’m fine” several times before stepping out of the arena.

She returned shortly and informed her teammates that she would not continue in the team competition. Jordan Chiles quickly grabbed her hold, picked her up and replaced her on uneven bars. Chiles will also replace Biles on beam. –Alyssa Roenigk
All eyes on Simone
There was an audible gasp from the crowd after Simone Biles deep landing on the jump in which she had to take a significant step forward. She was supposed to do an Amanar but ended up doing a 5/2 Yurchenko twist. She received a 13.766 – considerably low by her standards.
Simone Biles 🇺🇸 wins 13,766 on Vault for a 3/2 Yurchenko twist that would normally have been an Amanar. Biles opened up at the start of the twist and made a big jump forward on the landing. # Tokyo2020 #Artistic Gymnastics

Biles has since left the competition field with a member of the American training staff. There is no official word on his status, but his three remaining teammates have been locked into what appears to be an intense conversation.
Biles had just cut off his jump, doing 1-1 / 2 spins rather than 2-1 / 2, and landed with a big stride. His score of 13.766 was the lowest on vault so far. Something is wrong.

He is going down
The gymnasts have just come out on the floor. The biggest standing ovation from the small crowd was easily for the USA team, and everyone will be shocked to learn that Biles received the most enthusiastic reception during the team’s presentations. –D’Arcy Maine
Who is competing today?
As we talked about at the top, the competition format is changing to the team final. In Sunday’s qualifying meeting, all four of the United States team competed on all apparatus and the lower score was abandoned. In the final, three gymnasts compete on each apparatus and each score counts, so there is no margin for error.

American women could (and should) still win gold
Not everything turned out as expected for the US team in the preliminaries – in fact, the team finished second in a world or Olympic competition for the first time since 2010. But there was a lot going on in the preliminaries. behind the scenes: brutal competition – in competition for each member, as each athlete had to compete for the two places in the individual events.
yesterday wasn’t the meet of my life, but i have to say i learned a lot from it and am ready to go out and show the world why i am here. Thank you to everyone, from my family to my fans. I like you!!!! GO ️ pic.twitter.com/xf6kqlJZ73

Now, with scores erased and with singular purpose, the United States is still the team most likely to win. Here’s why – and who else you should watch in the team final.
