Omaha Beach undergoes surgery, second removed horse from Derby

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (LEX 18) – Omaha Beach, the scuffed horse at the 145th Kentucky Derby, was operated Friday morning and recovers.

Omaha Beach has undergone an epiglottis operation at the Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington.

His coach, Richard Mandella, said he had an epiglottis trapped, which led him to scratch the Derby horse.

Omaha Beach owner Rick Porter said on the phone at LEX 18 that there was no better place than Lexington to do the operation.

The Derby lost another horse when Haikal was scratched because of a left foot infection. he had been treated for an abscess and had not trained on Thursday or Friday.
