A powerful storm system swept over areas of Nebraska, causing severe flooding in towns like Omaha on Saturday, prompting rescuers to abandon their vehicles and seven people trapped in two elevators inside the basement of an apartment building.
The Omaha World-Herald reported that the basement of the Old Market Loft apartments quickly filled with water due to flash floods in the area. A video believed to have come from inside the elevator has also appeared online.

Tony Luu told the newspaper he was in one of the elevators at the time of the flooding. He said he was with two friends at the time. He said he went to the basement of the building to check the conditions given the precipitation. He said the elevator shook and didn’t respond when they pressed buttons to stop it.
The water reportedly started pouring in and soon reached their chest and necks, the newspaper reported. They were able to convince a friend to call 911. A roommate and two other people also saw a social media post and managed to get into the basement and help take down the elevator doors.

The report says firefighters also managed to rescue four other people trapped in another elevator in the building. None would have needed medical attention.
KETV described the conditions in the city.
“The rain fell so fast and so fierce, visibility was close to zero for those who tried to drive the streets during the height of the storm. Nickel to quarter hail fell along a Dodge road to Harrison, 144th east of the Missouri River, ”the report says.
