Muscat: Oman Air has announced that it will no longer allow older 15-inch Macbook Pro laptops in checked luggage during its flights.
The airline said the decision was made due to security concerns regarding "older models" of the 15-inch Macbook Pro.
These laptops can be carried in the aircraft with hand luggage when they are off for the duration of the flight. This decision came after the technology conglomerate Apple determined that some lithium batteries sold between September 2015 and February presented a "fire safety risk".
Oman Air said in a statement: "For the safety of our guests and crew, Oman Air has banned the transportation of older 15-inch Macbook Pro models in checked baggage.
"Customers must refrain from transporting the affected models in checked baggage and may be allowed to carry by hand, provided they remain extinguished throughout the flight, to protect them from accidental activation and to not reload them during the flight, "says the Oman release. Air added.
Apple previously said it found a defect in some models and launched a recall program in June.
In a statement from Apple, "Apple determined that in a limited number of 15-inch MacBook Pro of the previous generation, the battery could overheat and pose a fire safety risk.
"The units concerned were sold mainly between September 2015 and February 2017 and the product's eligibility is determined by the product's serial number," the statement added.
Oman Air has asked everyone to check Apple's website for the lithium battery recall program to determine if their laptops were included in the ban.
