WASHINGTON – President-elect Joe Biden’s plan to appoint Neera Tanden as head of the Office of Management and Budget is already sparking tensions on Capitol Hill, where Republicans say his past comments will threaten his confirmation and undermine the new’s commitment president to calm political waters.
Ms Tanden, currently the head of the Center for American Progress, a center-left think tank, became one of the first lightning rods in Mr Biden’s deployment of her team in part because of the comments she made on Twitter. She has used the platform to regularly criticize President Trump and Republican lawmakers, including floating allegations involving Russia, while grappling with the left wing of the Democratic Party.
Republicans began to voice concerns over the weekend after the Wall Street Journal announced she was the choice. Josh Holmes, adviser to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), Called his appointment on Twitter a “sacrifice to the gods of confirmation.”
GOP lawmakers returning to Washington on Monday said his comments raised doubts about his outlook.
“I think in light of his combative and insulting comments about many members of the Senate, mainly on our side of the aisle, it certainly creates a problematic path,” Sen. John Cornyn (R., Texas) said Monday ). He said Republicans were ready to work with Mr Biden, but Ms Tanden “may seem like her worst candidate to date.
