CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Indians selected Trevor Stephan from the unprotected Yankees list in December in the rule 5 draft. They could have fired him anytime and received half of their $ 100,000 investment in the right-hander from 6 feet 5 inches.
They didn’t, choosing to keep Stephan in their major league enclosure with just 52 games to go in the season. On more than one occasion, the decision has paid off. Sunday was one of those times.
Zach Plesac started against Detroit and barely made it through four innings. He threw 84 shots, allowing five runs on just two hits. Plesac was done after four and interim manager DeMarlo Hale needed an arm not only to protect a 5-5 tie, but also to bring the Indians a little deeper into the game.
Enter Stéphan.
He retired the Tigers in order in the fifth. He pushed Jeimer Candelario to start the sixth, but prompted a Grounder from Willi Castro to force Candelario in the second. That’s all Hale needed when he went to Nick Sandlin, Bryan Shaw, James Karinchak and Emmanuel Clase to get a 7-5 victory.
“I think Stephan did an exceptional job coming in, in a close game and in holding it,” Hale said.
There are two sides to being a Rule 5 player. The team that selects that player must either keep him in the big league or re-propose him to their old team. This means he receives salary and service time in the big leagues while still making the list of 26 players.
The downside is that a player can be forgotten. He is there for the future, not necessarily the present. Stephan’s appearance on Sunday was only his third since July 24.
“It can be difficult,” Stephan said. “You try to stay as sharp as possible when throwing (sessions). You want to stay as specific as possible, so when your name is called out, you can be reliable.
Stephan, in 11 of his 27 appearances, pitched more than one inning. The ability to pitch more than one end is an important part of what he brings to the bullpen.
“Once you lay down you have to stay ready,” he said. “When you find yourself in a situation like Sunday, you just try to carry the load into the reliever box and keep the score where it is.”
Stephen is 1-0 with a 4.70 ERA. He struck out 44 strikes and walked 20 in 38 1/3 innings.
# 1: Sunday quick hits
* SS Andres Gimenez, promoted from Class AAA Columbus on Saturday, let the first ball go through his legs for an error in the first inning. He collected his first RBI in the big leagues since May 8 with a sacrifice ball in the fourth inning.
* 1B Owen Miller’s first homer in the second gave him two in the big leagues. The first came on July 31 against the White Sox. Do we feel a trend?
* Zach Plesac, in six starts since being off the injured list on July 8, is 1-1 with a 6.16 ERA (21 earned runs in 30 2/3 innings). He’s allowed eight home runs in those six starts.
Plesac allowed five runs in four innings against Detroit on Sunday. He entered the game with a career ERA of 0.88 in five starts against the Tigers.
* Franmil Reyes took part in the Indians’ first run on Sunday with a single in the first run. Reyes is hitting 0.333 (25 for 75) with 10 home runs and 22 RBIs in his career against Detroit.
N ° 2: A good start
Receiver Wilson Ramos has long played in the big leagues, but he still knows how to enter.
Ramos, in his debut for the Indians on Saturday night, went 3 for 4 with a home run. His first homerun in the ninth inning was the Indians’ lone run scored in a 2-1 loss to Detroit.
Not only was Ramos making his debut for the Indians, he also made it against the Tigers, the team with which he opened the 2021 season.
“Playing against my old team is part of the business,” said Ramos. “One day you are here and the next day you don’t know where you will be. But I’m very happy to be back in the majors.
The Indians picked Ramos’ contract from Columbus when Roberto Perez was placed on the injured list with right shoulder and back problems. He caught rookie Eli Morgan on Saturday night.
“He threw the ball really well,” said Ramos. “He was aggressive. He attacked those hitters really well. He mixed his throws and threw both sides on the plate.
Morgan pitched a career-high seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits.

José Devers had three hits and Steven perez put out three strikes and allowed a run in four innings.
