Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley (9) is triggered by Appalachian defensive lineman Okon Godwin (47).
All that Trace McSorley wanted was a chance, and the Baltimore Ravens offered him a Saturday by selecting him in the sixth round of the NFL draft.
"Incredibly blessed to be a raven! I can not wait to get to work " McSorley tweeted.
McSorley was one of four Penn State players drafted Saturday. The others were:
n DE Shareef Miller (fourth round to the Philadelphia Eagles)
No CB Amani Oruwariye (who dropped to the fifth round with the Detroit Lions)
n Security Nick Scott (seventh round at L.A. Rams)
Offensive lineman Ryan Bates was screened at the height of a fifth round pick, but was not drafted. Defensive tackle Kevin Givens has not evolved either. Both left Penn State a year earlier to declare themselves candidates.
McSorley is the most successful starting quarterback in PSU history, but that does not guarantee he will be recruited. In fact, most of the drafting simulations had left him un-drawn because of concerns about his size and the strength of his arm.
However, McSorley overcame obstacles throughout his footballing career, including as a weakly recruited quarterback although he won three consecutive titles, before taking over at PSU and establishing near all major records in the history of the Nittany Lion.
The Ravens selected McSorley with the 24th pick in the sixth round (197th overall).
"It was a kind of choice to sleep for us" Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta told the team's website. "We have summoned for the day local professionals. We worked on him and fell in love with the child. "
McSorley getting to the Ravens makes sense in many ways.
Last year, the team, Joe Flacco, who played the pocket pocket pocket, had become a mobile threat and the former winner of the Heisman Trophy, Lamar Jackson. The replacement for Baltimore is Robert Griffin III, another mobile threat and former winner of Heisman.
So, given the type of offensive the team now wants to perform, McSorley should be able to step in and use his skills in a comfortable place while learning the NFL techniques. Most of the most important pieces of McSorley's at Penn State came when he struggled to make a pass on the ground or took off and ran alone.
Even if no one wants to see someone get hurt, even if Jackson runs, he might have trouble staying healthy for 16 games a season. And Griffin has already had several injuries during his career. McSorley, therefore, could still be in the lineup for potential play time if anything happens to both of these.
The Ravens also plan to try to find ways to use McSorley in special teams.
"It will be really fun to create different opportunities for these guys to get to the field in different ways," Ravens coach John Harbaugh told the team's website. "We see him first playing the role of quarterback. That's what we told him. We told him six weeks ago that you will become a quarterback and that's when it all starts.
"But that should not be limited to that. I think he can stand in line and do other things just like (Griffin) will be able to do it. … You've seen what the Saints have done there with their third quarter (Taysom Hill), and that's something we can do as well. "
Penn State coach James Franklin said McSorley "Will remain as one of the best, if not the best, quarterbacks in the history of Penn State."
"He has an excellent IQ football and is a winner in every sense of the word.We know that he will bring the same mindset to the Ravens" Franklin said in a PSU statement. "As a quarterback, he quickly learns and executes our attack with extreme precision and has an incredible ability to escape the rushers in his pocket to make him a dangerous runner."

Miller is from Philadelphia and has always loved the Eagles. He now dreams of playing for them. He was asked during the PSU day how would it be if the Eagles picked him up.
"My dad could have a heart attack because he loves the Eagles," he said then. "It would be a blessing. It would be a nice story, coming from Philly, playing at Penn State then going to the Eagles. "
Miller was the 36th and last choice of the fourth round (138th overall).
Oruwariye was considered by some to be a possible second-round pick, but slipped to the eighth pick in the fifth round (146th overall) against the Lions. It was feared for its speed, which could have brought down its stock.
Scott was the 29th pick of the Rams' seventh round (243rd overall). He can play safety and could also play a role in the special teams.
Bates reportedly signed a free trade agreement with the Eagles soon after the project ended.
Givens will sign a contract with the San Francisco 49ers, according to his agent.
Kappy has announced that he has signed a free trade agreement with the Atlanta Falcons.
