TA single antibiotic treatment can damage healthy bacteria in the intestine for at least a year and perhaps permanently, scientists warned.

Researchers from University College London (UCL) discovered that a single prescription could alter the composition of the microbiome: a set of billions of bacteria, fungi and microbes, that live in the body and help regulate the immune system, to digest and produce vitamins.

In a healthy human gut, there are approximately 1,000 different types of bacteria in the intestine, and a greater diversity of species has been linked to better health.
