One dead, four injured, suspect Gregory Ulrich arrested after shooting at Minnesota health clinic

A man was taken into custody Tuesday following a shooting at a Minnesota clinic that left one person dead and four others injured, law enforcement and hospital officials said. The shooting took place at the Allina Health clinic in the city of Buffalo.

A representative for Hennepin Healthcare said the victim transported to his hospital died Tuesday evening. The deceased victim has not been identified. One victim was released from hospital and three others are in critical but stable condition, according to North Memorial Health.

Wright County Sheriff Sean Deringer identified the suspect as Gregory Paul Ulrich, 67, a longtime Buffalo resident with a history of police contact. Urlich is currently being held at the Wright County Jail, according to CBS Minnesota. Buffalo Police Chief Pat Budke said he believed Ulrich had targeted the facility or someone inside because he had a history of health care dissatisfaction he had received.

Deringer said police received a 911 call saying someone was shooting at the clinic at 10:54 a.m. and responded to what he called a “horrible scene.” Helicopter footage showed shattered windows at the front of the building.

Deringer said responders evacuated injured victims and took the suspect into custody. A suspicious package was found in the corner of the lobby of the building and Minneapolis Police technicians responded to help investigate.

Deringer said investigators learned that Ulrich was staying at a Super 8 motel in Buffalo. Officers searched her room and found “other suspicious devices” and evacuated the motel, Deringer said. He added that the ministry was in the process of executing additional search warrants.

Budke said investigators were working to trace the suspect’s final hours before the shooting.

“We believe Mr Ulrich acted alone, so perhaps a sigh of relief for us in the law enforcement community, and our community as a whole, we are not looking for additional suspects,” Deringer said. .

Deringer said Ulrich was “no stranger” to law enforcement, and had had a series of run-ins with police since 2003.

Budke sometimes became emotional during the press conference, describing the small community as family.

“Our hearts are breaking as a community,” said Budke. “It’s a day that no community would want to experience.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey tweeted: “There is unspeakable depravity in hurting those who work to heal us.”

Congressman Tom Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota whose district includes Buffalo, tweeted that he was praying for the clinic’s staff and patients. “My staff and I are in contact with Allina’s team and we hope this horrible situation will be resolved quickly and peacefully,” Emmer said.
