Officials from the state of Washington opened an investigation after employees at three Safeway stores reported having discovered more than a million dollars worth of cocaine concealed in banana cartons.
Smuggling was reported for the first time on Sunday at a Safeway in Woodinville, about 20 km northeast of Seattle, the King County Sheriff's Office said.
Employees opened a box of bananas and found 22 kilos of cocaine – the equivalent of more than $ 550,000, according to investigators.
A little later in the day, employees of a Safeway in Bellingham – in northwestern Washington, near the Canadian border – discovered about 23 kilograms of cocaine while unloading banana shipments, reported Q13 Fox.

"We know everything has been shipped from a central warehouse, but we do not know where it came from. So it's a work in progress, "said Sgt. Ryan Abbott of the King County Sheriff's Office.
The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) was managing the investigation, he added.
