The best benefits of Pixel ownership apart from the camera are the exclusive software features like Recorder, which (as the name suggests) records audio. and transcribes it in near real time. Last year, the first signs of Google Drive-based backups were spotted. At the time, the elements of the feature that could be activated purported to point to a new website recorder.google.com, which did not exist. Well, the site is live now, and it promises the other half of the currently non-functional functionality.
The site is up, but the backups themselves are not yet active.
The site is currently just a landing page, but for a very brief moment when loading, you may preview other UI elements at the top and bottom of the screen. At the top, you can see a text entry field clearly labeled “search this recording” for you to browse through the contents of a transcript. At the bottom are the playback and volume controls, the five and ten second jumps back and forth (respectively, a progress bar, and what could be a binary toggle on the left.

We would guess, but I’m assuming that a list view to navigate through the recordings and view the contents of the transcript will be displayed in the center. This unknown toggle might control something about the transcript view, as it seems to indicate a switch between column types, or it may adjust other aspects of the interface – who knows.

The details behind the new saving mechanism are not expressed by the site, which simply claims that “recordings saved from the Recorder app on your Google Pixel will appear here.” However, many details have already been guessed from an APK teardown.
When it lands, the feature will let you save your Recorder recordings to Google Drive with options for things like allowing it via mobile data. When deleting recordings, you will be prompted to indicate whether they should also be deleted from your backups and other synced devices or not. There’s even a save indicator in the account picker, though details haven’t changed since the feature was first demonstrated (all included in the screenshots below).

Currently, you can manually save the recordings yourself by sharing them with a target like Google Drive, but this is hardly practical and certainly not automatic.
The new site invites you to learn more about Recorder on the old feature promotion website, but it has not yet been updated to mention the backup feature.
With less than a week to go until March 1 (the first Monday of the new month, when Pixel updates typically land), and with a feature update scheduled for this time around, I’ll strongly I suspect the feature will be officially announced as part of Google’s March Feature Drop update for Google pixels next week. Previously, Recorder had integrated the integration of the Assistant as part of the Drop functionality last June.
