The OnePlus 9 series (presumably the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro) will launch on March 23. But we don’t have to wait until then to unbox the cameras onto the cameras – by far the most anticipated feature we’ve all been waiting for.
To anyone’s surprise, OnePlus and CEO Pete Lau provided details on the OnePlus 9 series cameras on Twitter. Here’s everything we know about cameras so far.
Co-developed by Hasselblad – We know that OnePlus 9 phones will ship with cameras co-developed by Swedish photography company Hasselblad. OnePlus announced earlier this week that it has signed a three-year long-term partnership with Hasselblad to develop new camera technologies for its phones.
OnePlus claims that the OnePlus 9 series will have a “Hasselblad Pro mode” with a “revamped user interface based on Hasselblad’s image processing software”. Settings confirmed in this Hasselblad Pro mode include controls for ISO, focus, exposure times, white balance, 12-bit RAW format, and more.
What image sensor does the OnePlus 9 camera use?
Sony IMX789 – Camera specs haven’t really mattered much over the past few years, but the spec sheet is starting to get remarkable again. The OnePlus 9 series will use a custom Sony IMX789 image sensor – the largest sensor OnePlus has ever installed in a phone. The larger sensor means not only better photos at a higher resolution, but also improved photos in low light conditions due to greater light absorption.
The 48-megapixel sensor will be a 120 fps 4K video shooting cable and OnePlus has also confirmed the 8K resolution video recording at 30 fps, although this may be exclusive to the OnePlus 9 Pro camera.
How will the image quality of the OnePlus 9 camera improve?
More realistic colors – Android phones are not known for their color accuracy. While OnePlus has toned down the saturation on its phones compared to the more vivid colors you get on Samsung’s Galaxy phones, they still aren’t as natural or lifelike as the colors coming from an iPhone camera.
The Hasselblad team will make things right according to Lau. “A camera should always allow you to see the world in its natural colors,” Lau tweeted. “And that’s one of the first things we worked on as we developed a new natural color grading with @Hasselblad.”
Included with the tweet is a photo he alludes to was taken with OnePlus 9 cameras. The photo is colorful and vibrant, but it’s hard to say how many retouching was done and how much lighting the camera had done. environment has been controlled to produce this photo. Needless to say, I can’t wait to test the OnePlus 9 series cameras for myself to see how truly natural the colors look in an unprofessional shooting scenario.
What will the resolution of the OnePlus 9’s ultra-wide camera be?
50-megapixel ultra-wide camera – Only a few years ago, ultra-wide cameras became a staple of smartphones. Since then, there has been a slow progression towards improving image quality with phone cameras improving processing for sharper photos (especially at corners and edges); increase the aperture to allow better ultra-wide shots in low light; and some ultra-wide cameras even have autofocus.
OnePlus Official Twitter Account Confirmed OnePlus 9 Series Ultra-Wide Camera will have 50 megapixels of resolution. Lau continued with a tweet and a sample image taken with said high resolution ultra-wide. Lau said the ultra-wide OnePlus 9 is “clearer and more true to the world around you.”
Fifty megapixels is an insane leap in detail. Compare that to the 12-megapixel on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, 12-megapixel on the Galaxy S21 Ultra, and the 48-megapixel sensor with a 12-megapixel image by default on the OnePlus 8 Pro.
How will the ultra-wide camera be improved on the OnePlus 9?
The ultra-wide is a “free-form lens” that dramatically reduces distortion from 10-20% to about 1%, according to GSMArena. Below is a video showing the distortion reduction of the Sony IMX789 image sensor.
Lau also confirmed that the OnePlus 9 series ultra-wide camera will have the Sony IMX766 sensor, but will still have the reduced distortion of the IMX789. Check out these two photos he shared on Twitter:
Will the OnePlus 9 camera take better photos at night and in low light conditions?
We hope so. OnePlus’ Nightscape mode just keeps getting better with each new flagship phone and with the new Sony IMX789 sensor and Hasselblad image processing, we expect night photography to get even better. It will be a big step backwards if the situation worsens.
What are the specifications of the OnePlus 9 camera?
Full camera specifications for the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro have yet to be confirmed. Rumors suggest the OnePlus 9 will have a triple-lens rear camera and the OnePlus 9 Pro will have a four-lens rear camera.
The OnePlus 8 Pro has a triple lens camera with a main wide lens, an ultra wide lens, and a 3x telephoto lens. It also comes with a “color filter” sensor. The OnePlus 8, on the other hand, has a camera system with a main wide lens, an ultra-wide lens, and a 3x telephoto lens.
OnePlus may include an updated color filter sensor or macro lens for the OnePlus 9 Pro’s camera.
How many megapixels will the OnePlus 9 selfie cameras have?
There’s even less information about the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro’s selfie cameras. From what we’ve seen floating around, OnePlus will stick to a 16-megapixel selfie camera up front via a perforated cutout, just like on the OnePlus 8 series.
When will we know all about the OnePlus 9 camera?
OnePlus will officially unveil the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro on March 23 at 10 a.m.ET. We will then have all the specifications and features of the Hasselblad camera.
Where can I find a camera review for OnePlus 9 cameras?
Like always, Grab will have a review with in-depth comparisons as soon as we get our hands on the phones for testing. We will be sure to compare OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro iPhone 12 Pro Max, Galaxy S21 Ultra and OnePlus 8 Pro cameras. Stay tuned.
