OnePlus has developed a reputation for phone cameras that are mediocre at best, but that could turn the tide with the 9 Pro. YouTuber Dave2D has obtained footage of what appears to be a OnePlus 9 Pro with the Hasselblad branding clearly visible on its array of four rear cameras. If it is correct, OnePlus clearly wants buyers to take its camera technology seriously.
It’s unclear exactly what the Camera Matrix might do, although it’s safe to assume you won’t find a medium-format Hasselblad sensor inside. The images show two large sensors (standard and ultra-wide?) As well as two much smaller cameras that could include a macro camera. There is also what appears to be laser autofocus above the flash.
The picture is superficially similar to the alleged leaks for the base OnePlus 9, although this supposed phone lacks the additional camera and laser as well as the Hasselblad branding. It could be given an “Ultrashot” tag instead.
The Dave2D leak also appears to corroborate claims about the front, including its 1440p 120Hz curved display. This device comes with 11 GB of RAM (more likely 12 GB in shipping units) and 256 GB of storage.
It is not certain that a Hasselblad partnership would help or not. Motorola’s Hasselblad-branded mobile phone offered a significant improvement in stills, but you weren’t going to confuse it with a studio-quality camera. Much like Huawei’s long-standing partnership with Leica, it may be more about staying competitive (and gaining attention) than a major leap forward in movable camera technology.
