OnePlus 9 update adds Hasselblad XPan camera mode

OnePlus is looking to further strengthen its current partnership with Hasselblad by releasing a new update that adds the latter’s traditional XPan camera as the in-camera shooting mode for the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro.

The XPan cinematic mode marks a change in the collaboration between the two, which had proven to be disappointing on the OnePlus 9 Pro. Until now, Hasselblad’s contribution has focused more on color reproduction, but that takes things up a notch. XPan mode is available when you swipe up from main photo mode in the Camera app. It recreates the classic XPan film camera of the past using an interface that tries to capture the look and feel.

This means an aspect ratio of 65:21 (8: 3), with two “super wide” focal lengths of 30mm and 45mm. The 30mm shots are taken from the ultra-wide lens, with a crop factor to stay true to the focal length listed. The 45mm shots are taken from the main camera. Photographers still get images of 20 megapixels or more, despite the crop factor that makes the frame smaller. This means that it doesn’t use the standard 12MP mode, but rather the full pixel density of the sensor.

Swipe up and down to adjust the exposure, as well as the ability to switch between color and black and white, as another homage to what XPan was like in the movie era. These are simulations, of course, but to add a bit of flair to it all, the software emulates what it would look like to develop the film negative as it creates the digital preview after the shot is taken.

For some reason, OnePlus does not allow users to add XPan to the preferred mode menu on the camera app. It is treated as a special file which can only be accessed by swiping up. Either way, this is a new method of capturing images for OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro users that is reminiscent of how older Hasselblad XPan 35mm cameras allowed photographers to take photos. on a single image or on two images. Photographers can take panoramic style photos or take advantage of the vintage color palettes applied to this mode.

Here are a few more examples provided by OnePlus:

Along with the new XPan mode, OnePlus has updated other things for the camera, including better HDR and less noise, as well as the relentless sharpening reduction in auto mode. It also helps reduce excessive brightening that could tarnish photos in Nightscape, although OnePlus claims to have improved dynamic range in low-light shots. Overall, the camera app should also load and run faster than before.

The latest update will roll out to all OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro devices from September 17, 2021.
