The OnePlus Buds series delivered two solid pairs of true wireless earbuds last year that were great options for all Android users thanks to the addition of Google Fast Pair support. Now, however, even better OnePlus Buds Pro are on the horizon, but they’re dropping support for Google Fast Pair altogether.
Taking a step back, the OnePlus Buds and OnePlus Buds Z offered Google Fast Pair support. This is a standard available for accessories, including headphones and smartwatches, which allows faster pairing with Android devices and the ability to share this accessory with other Android devices with the same Google account. . It’s a useful feature that really is underutilized by accessory makers.
That’s why it’s quite disappointing that OnePlus has officially discontinued the feature on its Pro model headphones. The company confirmed the withdrawal to 9to5Google after our initial testing found it to be missing, something we initially assumed might simply be the result of pre-release software.
While the OnePlus Buds Pro don’t support Google Fast Pair, the brand was quick to point out that a quick pairing solution was available on OnePlus phones, as pictured below.
A form of quick pairing is also available through the “HeyMelody” app on other Android phones. When opening the app for the first time, it will immediately find Buds Pro and pair the headphones, but it’s not as seamless as Google’s solution. It also requires installing the app from the Play Store, and this is the only way to see the battery level of the charging case.
