OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei on Wednesday unveiled the name of his new company Nothing, a consumer tech-focused brand that will be based in London.

“Nothing’s mission is to break down barriers between people and technology to create a seamless digital future,” Pei, CEO of the new brand, said in a press release. “We believe the best technology is beautiful, yet natural and intuitive to use. When it is far enough along, it should blend into the background and give the impression of nothing. ”

Nothing will release smart devices in the first half of this year, the press release said.

The new company raised $ 7 million in funding in December and includes investors such as iPod inventor Tony Fadell, YouTuber Casey Neistat, Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin and Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, between other.

Pei has not disclosed which product line will be launched or with whom it will compete. But he told The Verge that Nothing is currently focusing on simpler categories as he strengthens his team which aims to connect multiple product categories.

There are no plans to profit from selling hardware instead of software subscriptions, according to Pei. However, in the long run, a “healthy business” requires both good hardware and software, he told The Verge.

To stand out in the market, Nothing will use “tailor-made” components in its products, said Pei. Nothing could focus on music and include making headphones, Wired reported in December.

Pei left OnePlus in October. It started the Chinese consumer electronics manufacturing company in 2013. OnePlus first sold phones through an invitation-only requirement and then adapted to a new business model offering affordable and competitive phones. The company also manufactures other products such as headphones and televisions.

In 2018, long lines of people were waiting outside the T-Mobile store in New York City to buy a OnePlus 6T smartphone than for the new iPhones. The smartphone comes with premium design, specifications and performance for less than $ 600.

Earlier that year, few Android phones were as successful as the OnePlus 6 when it was released. OnePlus reported that more than 15,000 people were lining up for the phone in 26 cities in 11 countries.
