OnePlus co-founder unveils new project, and it’s nothing

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei left the smartphone maker last year, later confirming he was working on a new company. Now Pei has confirmed that the new company is called Nothing.

“Nothing’s mission is to break down barriers between people and technology to create a seamless digital future,” read an excerpt from a company press release. So what will the company actually offer?

Well, the company noted in the statement that its first “smart devices” would launch in the first half of the year.

It didn’t reveal anything more specific, however, but Pei has already said Wired that the company is related to audio and that several products are coming in 2021. The executive added at the time that the new company was not limited to headphones.

Pei said The edge that Nothing would offer products in multiple categories, and aims to create an ecosystem of products.

“The ultimate vision of having everything connected seamlessly, this can only happen when multiple product categories are connected,” said the OnePlus co-founder. He also added that the company plans to make most of its money from hardware subscriptions rather than software, with earlier speculation pointing to a music service.

In what appears to be a photo from the former OnePlus company, Pei also suggested that Nothing will “not re-label someone else’s products.”

It’s also worth noting that Nothing’s European Director is David Sanmartin, who was most recently OnePlus European E-Commerce Director, according to his LinkedIn profile.
