- OnePlus has patented a way to store the selfie camera as part of a phone.
- The company noted in a 23 page patent application that such a device will exhibit a high screen-to-body ratio.
- This could be OnePlus’ latest attempt to create an uninterrupted smartphone display.
OnePlus could be working on a way to eliminate cutouts or puncture notches on its smartphones, and no, we’re not talking about setting up a pop-up mechanism. Instead, the company appears to be working on a “display device” that fits the selfie shooter in the slim bezels of a phone.
People at LetsGoDigital spotted a patent document filed by OnePlus with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). The 23-page documentation describes a OnePlus phone with an OLED display. A hole for the selfie camera is made on the upper frame covered with a “transparent protective plate”.
The patent application describes this display apparatus as having “high screen-to-body ratio, low production cost, high efficiency and high product reliability”.
While underscreen selfie cameras are the next step in the industry, the technology is not quite ready to take off just yet. ZTE’s Axon 20 5G is a prime example of how reliable under-screen cameras could be. Our readers are also different from the first under-screen camera phones.
Meanwhile, OnePlus’ patented solution appears to be an effective way to create an uninterrupted display. However, since this is only a patent, we don’t know if the company is seriously considering commercializing the design. We’re sure we won’t see anything like this on the OnePlus 9 series, given that the leaked renders already show a punch hole on the screen.
For now, all eyes are on the alleged link between OnePlus and Hasselblad for its upcoming flagships. Whether or not this new selfie camera placement is high on OnePlus’ priority list is a guess.
