OnePlus has long announced that it will merge its OxygenOS with Oppo’s ColorOS following the shocking revelation of its secret partnership with Oppo that was neither secret nor shocking. While a few new OnePlus devices are already running a ColorOS-based version of Android with an OxygenOS skin on top of it, OnePlus has not officially revealed how exactly it will transition all of its currently supported devices to ColorOS. Well, you don’t have to wonder anymore – OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has laid out a roadmap, detailing how things are going to progress from here.
OnePlus and Oppo are already in the process of merging their software development teams, with OxygenOS chief Gary C. at the helm, overseeing the unified operating system. OnePlus says the merger “will combine the strengths of both into a single, even more powerful operating system: the fast, smooth, and burden-free experience of OxygenOS, as well as the stability and richness of ColorOS features.”
However, despite the shared code, OxygenOS will retain a distinguished look compared to ColorOS. CEO Pete Lau said, “We will customize the unified operating system specifically for OnePlus devices to make sure it meets your expectations, such as keeping it as clean and light as before, and continuing to take supports unlocking bootloaders. ” That’s right, even the bootloader unlock, one of the hallmarks of the old passionate brand, stays on board, which is nice to hear. Lau continues, “I think the unified operating system will retain the OxygenOS DNA that many of you love so much, while providing you with an improved overall experience.”
As for the timeline, OnePlus wants to introduce the newly integrated operating system to its flagship line with its next high-end device 2022 first, which will likely be the OnePlus 10. The merger is expected to be fully completed in the same year, when all currently eligible the company’s smartphones will receive the brand new software. OnePlus will share the phones that exactly receive the update at a later date.
That said, some of the company’s phones are already running ColorOS, especially those in China. Internationally, there is also the OnePlus Nord 2, which was launched with software based on ColorOS, so the transition is already fully underway. In theory, this unified approach to software should also lead to a faster update, which is absolutely necessary for OnePlus, the company that has become notorious for falling behind the competition on the software side.
OnePlus wants to further diversify its range of phones.
Additionally, The Verge reports that OnePlus wants to skip its T series in the future. That means there won’t be a OnePlus 9T this year, and the company probably won’t release any other T-series phones in the future either. Instead, OnePlus wants to focus on diversifying its range globally, with devices specifically aimed at individual markets – a strategy made popular by Xiaomi and Realme.
