OnePlus 8 Pro vs. OnePlus 8

  • Stable Oxygen OS update results in complete data erasure of OnePlus 8 series.
  • The issue affects OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro devices running Oxygen OS 11 open beta 3.
  • OnePlus acknowledged the problem and cautioned against upgrading.

OnePlus rolled out the Oxygen OS 11.0.1.1 stable update for the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro over the weekend. However, the software that followed Oxygen OS 11 open beta 3 is anything but stable. A number of Open Beta 3 users who received the update reported that it caused a complete erasure of data from their phones.

After the update is installed, users are prompted to restart their devices. When they do, the data on their phones is completely erased. Unfortunately, several users are reporting that their phones were set to update automatically and had no choice but to install the faulty software.

One user even tried to revert to Oxygen OS 10 and downgrade to Oxygen OS 11 open beta 3 in an attempt to fix the issue. However, even with automatic updates turned off, the user reports that the phone has updated, requested a restart, and then erased all data again.

OnePlus, for its part, acknowledged the problem. A staff member took to the company forums on Saturday, saying the OnePlus software team is looking into the matter. The person also cautioned users against upgrading to the stable update.

“If you receive an OTA update, please double-confirm if it is an open beta update. If not, please do not install it, ”read a notice on the OnePlus forums.

Meanwhile, if you have already installed the update but haven’t restarted your phone, OnePlus recommends that you follow the steps below to avoid data loss.

  • Install this APK. You must install it after installing the update, but before restarting.
  • Once the APK is installed, run the app and tap “Keep data”.
  • You should now be able to restart the phone without losing your data.

OnePlus states that users should always back up essential data before restarting their phone after following the aforementioned steps.
