It looks like the OnePlus finally has a rumor that will never die, at least not until it comes to fruition next year. It started in 2014, right around the debut of OnePlus, and almost got an announcement this month before OnePlus pulled the rug again. The company’s first wearable device may still be in the works, with a slated launch in 2021, but when it does, it might not look like most smartwatches these days, at least not in this respect. which concerns the software that runs there.
Android has made it much easier to manufacture smartphones, Google certified or not, by freeing manufacturers from the hassle of developing and maintaining their own custom mobile software. Wear OS, formerly Android Wear, does the same for smartwatches, which is why it is the most common platform for wearable devices. There are of course a few exceptions, and the OnePlus Watch could be one of them.
Max Jambor, aka @MaxJmb on Twitter, threw the bombshell in one line. According to the advice, the OnePlus watch will not use Wear OS, that simple. Of course, that still leaves a lot of room for speculation on what OnePlus will use instead.
There are many smartwatch manufacturers out there that have their own custom operating systems, but you don’t have to stray too far. In China, Xiaomi and OPPO use a modified version of Android instead of Wear OS while Huawei uses its own custom operating system. Either of these is plausible but may not be right for the product.
Even with a non-Wear OS Android platform, OnePlus will still be forced to do the job of connecting to an Android or even iOS device, not to mention the lack of support for popular apps. Given the close collaboration between OnePlus and Google over the years, including on its Android TV products, this rumor is definitely weird, disappointing, and hopefully incorrect.
