On Wednesday, TripAdvisor published its 2021 Travelers’ Choice “Best of the Best” restaurant awards, and only one restaurant in San Francisco was selected.
Kokkari Estiatorio came in 10th place in the annual ranking in the “Gastronomy” category.
“Always the best,” read one of the reviews on its TripAdvisor page.
Kokkari has long been an establishment in San Francisco, known for its wood-roasted meats and Greek flavors.
Over two decades old, Kokkari seems a pretty safe and straightforward choice. As former San Francisco Chronicle food critic Michael Bauer wrote of the Financial District restaurant in 2015: “With the scent of oregano and embers, diners might imagine themselves on the Greek Islands. For those who dream of going there, the simple and pure food in Kokkari is an incentive to fulfill that desire. “
TripAdvisor restaurant prices are calculated on the basis of “the quality and quantity of traveler reviews and ratings” from January 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021. This year, the awards were presented in eight categories: gastronomy , everyday meals, quick bites, photo-perfect restaurants, dates, the best places for brunch, the hottest new restaurants and the best vegan places.
Kokkari wasn’t the only Bay Area establishment to earn a niche in the fine dining category. Three North Bay restaurants were also on the list, including Valette in Healdsburg (# 17), The French Laundry in Yountville (# 21) and Bistro Jeanty (# 22), also in Yountville.
Gott’s Roadside in St Helena was also on the list of best quick bites, ranking at No. 15.
