President Trump is right. Watching Bernie Sanders on Fox News was a little weird.
It was also a bit wonderful to see a grouchy and thirsty democrat socialist set up an alternative political universe behind the enemy lines.
Although Sanders has signed a loyalty pledge saying he will run for the presidency of the Democratic Party in 2020, he is an outsider. That's why he understands what too many evil democrats do not understand: the need to get out of Rachel Maddow's bubble. Despite the polarization of this country, some voters still respect a politician who crosses a hostile territory and tells them what they do not want to hear. Experts say that's not where the primary votes are. But the experts have already been wrong before, is not it?
The Sanders Town Hall, hosted by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, attracted nearly 2.6 million viewers. To date, it was the most-watched town hall of the 2020 election candidates, which has led other Democrats to consider the unthinkable – a rendezvous with Fox.
This also shows the foolishness of the Democratic National Committee's decision to ban Fox from hosting one of its main sanctioned debates because the network is "too close" to Trump. If you are trying to expand your universe of voters, why is it negative? If Democrats continue to preach only to their own choir, they will get what they deserve – four more years of Trump. And if they give the land of Fox to Sanders, they may also have what they fear: a confrontation with Trump-Sanders. An Egyptian seventy taking on another.
Trump geint that his supporters were kept away from the town hall hearing and that is why Sanders received a warm welcome. Trump's biggest concern should be the large audience of Fox regular viewers who have heard a progressive message about health care and taxes, delivered with a bluster at the filter-free Bernie. Sanders critics say that his newly created millionaire status runs up against his fundamental socialist philosophy. This is a false argument. As he told the mayor, he is not against financial success. He only believes those who "have a lot of money. . . should pay their fair share of money. And that includes him.
"I paid the taxes I owe," said Sanders, who added, "And by the way, why do not you ask Donald Trump to come here to ask him how much he pays taxes ? ?
He also proposed a non-threatening definition of democratic socialism; for him, it means "creating a government, an economy and a society that works for everyone, not just the 1%".
When asked if, at age 77, he was too old to run for president, Sanders called the question just. But, he said, "in the end, it's not that you're young or old. That's what you believe. "
As for whether the Democrats are going too far to the left, Sanders said what was upsetting him was really "a pathological lying president." But he also said that if the Democrats spent all their time attacking Trump, they would lose. They must "define a logical program for working families".
The Town Hall's response to a question about Medicare for all has largely caught the attention of the media. At one point, Baier asked how many of them had private health insurance "work". What appeared to be a majority raised their hand. He then asked how many would be "willing to move on to what the senator says, a system run by the government." The same number seemed to raise the hand. During the exchange, Sanders acknowledged that taxes would increase to fund a government-run health system, but argued that health insurance premiums, deductibles, and co-payments would decrease. .
You do not win any deep ideological battle in a city hall. But Sanders had the courage to lead the fight directly to the other side. What is really weird? It's considered strange.
