The Oppo Reno was launched in China a few days ago and we spent the last few days with the handset. The phone is available in two variants: the Oppo Reno standard and the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom Edition. We are also expecting a 5G version of the 10x Zoom Edition when it was launched worldwide on April 24th.
Although it does not have a presence in the United States, Oppo is a difficult business to ignore. He produced some of the industry's most unique and catchy smartphones, such as last year's Oppo Find X and the newest Oppo F11 Pro. Oppo Reno continues the company's efforts to push the boundaries of smartphones. In addition to powerful specifications, the edition Oppo Reno 10x Zoom Edition offers a periscope camera, while both models are equipped with a selfie camera shark fin that will turn heads.
Zoom, zoom and more zoom
The standard Oppo Reno and Oppo Reno 10x Zoom Edition models offer many of the same features and features that unite them, but they are separated by some key differentiators. One of the most notable differences can be found in the cameras. Both models have the same 48MP f / 1.7 main camera (Sony IMX586), but this is the only common rear sensor.
A secondary depth sensor of 5 MP for portrait mode bokeh effects is associated with the 48 MP primary on the Oppo Reno standard model. Oppo exchanges this on the 10x Zoom edition with two additional sensors of different focal lengths. The 8 MP wide-angle lens offers a 120-degree field of view and a 13-megapixel periscope telephoto lens. The telephoto lens is capable of 5x optical zoom and a 10x hybrid zoom similar to that of the Huawei P30 Pro. This is the same sensor as the one presented by Oppo in a phone prototype at the MWC 2019. Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) is available on the 13MP periscope and the 48MP camera on the edition Zoom 10x, while the standard model is totally devoid of OIS.
In the short time we spent with the Zoom 10x edition, the 5x photos are crisp and clear, with no sign of loss of quality. The 10x magnified photos are still of impressive sharpness. You will notice a slight drop in the details, but overall, the results are still excellent. The minimum focus distance on the telephoto lens is quite long and should not be used on subjects close to you.

Similar but different
Not only does the Zoom Edition 10x have more cameras, but it also has more power. If you want what Oppo has to offer, the 10x Zoom edition is the version to get. It has the Snapdragon 855, a 6.6-inch Full HD + OLED display and a 4,065 mAh battery. The Oppo Reno standard will give you a Snapdragon 710, a slightly smaller 6.4-inch screen and a battery of 3765 mAh.
Both devices are available in 6GB and 8GB RAM variants with VOOC 3.0 fast charge and built-in fingerprint sensor. In our limited tests, the built-in fingerprint sensor appeared very fast, accurate and reliable. We used a lot of smartphones with built-in fingerprint sensors and this is by far the fastest we've tried. It's as fast as a traditional sensor and its use is not frustrating. It's a good sign for technology that has not made a good start yet.
A 3.5mm headphone jack is one of the few advantages of the standard Oppo Reno model compared to the Zoom 10x edition. Unfortunately, this means that you will have to settle for lower specifications and no telephoto zoom if you really want this port.
The shark finning selfie shooter
The most frequently mentioned feature on Oppo Reno smartphones is the contextual camera. With phones such as Find X and F11 Pro, Oppo is no stranger to selfie cameras, but it has a very intriguing design. Instead of a small square coming out of the phone, Oppo Reno uses a wedge or shark fin shape. It is much larger and covers most of the top edge of the phone.
Oppo makes good use of the larger popup by incorporating the earpiece and the back flash. This means that the camera appears when you switch to the camera before or turn on the flash. In the event of a fall of the phone, Oppo has implemented a built-in security to automatically retract the shark fin. It will shrink even if you throw the phone in your hand and catch it. Both models have shark pop-up and the same 16MP f / 2.0 camera.
The main advantage of this mechanism is that it eliminates the need for a notch or perforation. This allows the Oppo Reno to have a completely uninterrupted display. The glasses surrounding the screen are also very thin. This leaves room for an impressive screen / body ratio of 93.1%.
Oppo classic design
Both versions of the Oppo Reno use the familiar Oppo design language we have seen on other devices such as the F11 Pro and R17 Pro. Rounded corners and tapered rear glass create a modern and elegant look. Oppo's iconic crescent bows, which add to the overall comfort of the device, are on the top and bottom edges of the phone.
A design aesthetic that we appreciate most is that the rear cameras are perfectly aligned with the rear window. Nowadays, it is quite rare to find a smartphone, especially a flagship product, with flush camera modules. The phone looks more elegant and can sit flat on a table without wobbling. The standard Oppo Reno will be available in black, pink, purple and aqua, while the Zoom 10x edition will be offered in black and aqua.
Price and availability
The price of the Oppo Reno and Oppo Reno 10x Zoom Standard models is as follows: the standard model starts at 2,999 yuan (~ 447 $) for the 6 GB model + 128 GB, 3,299 yuan (~ 491 $) for the variant 6 GB / 256 GB and 3,599 yuan (~ $ 536) for the 8 GB / 256 GB option. The 10x zoom version will be available for 3999 yuan (~ $ 595) for the 6 GB / 128 GB version, 4,499 yuan yuan (~ $ 670) for the 6GB / 256GB model and 4,799 yuan (~ $ 714) for the 8GB / 256GB variant.
