A fifth The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound, Lt. Jennifer Amat said.
“Tonight, around 5:30 p.m., the officers arrived at a shooting call over the 202 W. Lincoln area,” Amat said at a press conference, adding that the officers had encountered gunshots on places.
Orange is located approximately 30 miles south of Los Angeles. The complex where the shooting took place is home to several companies, including Farmer’s Insurance, Calco Financial and Miller Counseling.
It is not known where in the building the shooting took place.
The suspect was also taken to hospital after a shootout with police, Amat said. The suspect was shot and is in critical condition, she said.
The department gave no further information on the suspect or the victims.
“I can tell you that we haven’t had an incident like this in the city of Orange since 1997,” Amat said. “It is such a tragedy for the victims, their families, our community and our police service.”
A gun was found at the scene, Amat said.
News of the mass shooting drew immediate condemnation.
California Representative Katie Porter said she and her team are monitoring the situation.
The FBI Los Angeles Division confirmed to CNN that it responded to the shooting routinely, but that the Orange Police Department was the lead investigative agency.
