The Orange County health care agency reported 47 new coronavirus-related deaths on Sunday, January 17, up four from Saturday, for a total of 2,367 known COVID-related deaths.
The daily death toll does not represent an exact snapshot of the exact number of people who died on a given date. Instead, the tally includes deaths that occurred a few days earlier, based on death certificates and completed case investigations.
Two days ago on Friday, the county reported a one-day record of 82 deaths.
Among the deaths on Sunday, six were residents of skilled nursing facilities and eight were residents in assisted living. None of them were being held in the Orange County Jail. Thirty-three people who died were not living in institutions.
As of Sunday, 538 people with COVID-19 were on treatment in intensive care units at Orange County Hospital.
The availability of state-adjusted intensive care beds in Southern California for coronavirus patients remains at zero, in a formala that does not reflect beds always open for patients facing other life-threatening emergencies. The unadjusted figure shows 7.9% of beds available in ICUs.
The county reported 1,448 new cases of coroanvirus on Sunday – less than half of Saturday’s 3,454 sum. In total, nearly 211,000 residents of Orange County have tested positive for the coronavirus.
Orange County and all of California have seen an explosion in cases since the fall, before Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings and trips saw a continued increase. Two months ago, on November 17, the county reported 352 new cases – a figure that would soon increase tenfold.
Hospitals have struggled to meet the dramatically increased demand – adding temporary units in parking lots to accommodate additional beds.
Due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the OC Health Care Agency will not be releasing new issues until Tuesday, January 19.
