EUGENE, Oregon – Oregon and the state of Oregon became the first Power 5 schools to announce that they will require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test for people over 12 to attend to his football matches.
In its announcement Friday, Oregon said the decision was made with public health authorities and “state counterparts.” The negative test result must be within three days of the event.
The warrant takes effect Monday and comes at the end of a week when state officials warned of rapidly filling hospitals as daily reported cases hit record numbers.
Oregon is one of many Pac-12 schools that require students and employees to be vaccinated or request an exemption.
The Oregon football team opens its season at the 54,000-seat Autzen Stadium in Eugene on September 4 against Fresno State. Oregon State begins their home schedule at Reser Stadium on September 11 against Hawaii.
Earlier today, Hawaii became the first major college football college to say it would have no supporters in attendance for its season opener sporting events due to a recent surge of COVID-19. Hawaii’s first home football game is on September 5 against Portland State.
The measures come about a week after Tulane in New Orleans became the first school that plays football in the highest subdivision of the NCAA to require proof of vaccine or a negative test to attend sporting events.
Tulane’s move followed a mandate set by city officials that also impacts the NFL Saints, but school officials have said they are preparing to institute the policy on their own. .
