Oregon state senators have spoken out against the actions of Texas Democrats who fled their state to protest a recent voting bill.
About 50 Texas lawmakers fled their own state on Monday to prevent the state legislature from voting on two electoral reform bills introduced by Republicans in the state. Although various Twitter users criticized them for their behavior, Democrats in Texas received moderate to positive support from fellow lawmakers and members of the media.
Speaking to Fox News, Oregon State Senators Tim Knopp and Dennis Linthicum discussed what they saw as a “political circus” between Democrats and the media.
“The national media is a spokesperson for the Democratic Party. There are example after example of media treating Democrats differently than they are treating Republicans,” commented Knopp. “It’s just evident with the way they treat the previous administration, with the way they treat the current one. Additionally, Oregon Republicans noted that the proposal would dramatically increase the cost of living in Oregon to combat “climate change.” When talks between Democrats collapsed, 12 Republican lawmakers ultimately fled their state to avoid providing the chamber with a quorum.
Despite the superficial similarities between their actions and the Democrats in Texas, Knopp and Linthicum both pointed out the main differences.
“Notice what they did, they didn’t run away to Oklahoma or Louisiana. Where they went was Washington DC. This is all for domestic political consumption,” Linthicum said. .
In contrast, Linthicum noted, he and other senators crossed the border for hours into Idaho, without the help of private planes or media support.
Knopp also noted that the subject matter of the two bills, according to public opinion, is radically different.
“The public was very opposed to cap and trade policies which in this bill were very expensive, ineffective and complicated,” Knopp said. “Generally, the public favors the security of the ballot, the identification of voters and the assurance that the elections are fair and that the count is correct.”
However, Oregon Republicans were regularly lambasted for their actions by the media in 2019, contrary to the current view on Texas Democrats.
