Georgia US Senate Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff said on CNN’s’ State of the Union ‘Sunday that he would support closures in Georgia amid the coronavirus pandemic if recommended by’ experts in public health ”.

Partial transcription as follows:

BASH: So let’s talk about the virus, which obviously overshadows everything in this country, including your race. The White House Coronavirus Task Force has said Georgia, your state, is – quote – “in the early stages of a full resurgence” and now is the time to dramatically increase mitigation. So, would you be in favor of tougher restrictions in Georgia, such as the temporary closure of restaurants and businesses?

OSSOFF: I think we should follow the expertise of public health experts, like those at the CDC, which is based here in Georgia. And if this is the consensus of the public health community, we must take this advice very seriously. And politicians must recognize the limits of our own knowledge and wisdom. Epidemiologists who dedicate their careers and training to studying the spread of infectious diseases are qualified to advise us on the right mitigation procedures. And the problem we’ve had all year is that politicians have suppressed and ignored public health advice. It’s time to trust the experts, to listen to the public health professionals in a public health crisis.

BASH: So if they were to say to stop things temporarily, you would totally agree?

OSSOFF: If the CDC and its leaders gave a strong indication that these kind of stronger mitigation measures are needed to save lives and contain the spread of the virus, it would be professional misconduct on the part of politicians to ignore this advice There are over 2,000 Americans dying. per day. The spread is out of control. And the problem is, we’ve ignored the public health experts. So I will listen to them and not to political consultants, pollsters or people who look after their own financial interests like my opponent.
