Washington State Police, responding to a routine report of a suspicious vehicle Thursday morning, discovered a scene straight out of a horror movie: the car was filled with dismembered body parts and substances resembling “flesh,” authorities said.
The abandoned 2014 Honda Accord in the small town of Othello might not have garnered much attention from passers-by if not for one ominous detail: it had blood on the hood.
“Upon further investigation inside the vehicle, a deceased subject was discovered,” a press release from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said.
From there, things quickly went downhill when what appeared to be “flesh” was found in the backseat, with a human head sitting on the back floor, according to court documents.
Police quickly discovered other body parts in the trunk of the vehicle. It is believed that the members belong to two different people.
“At this time, the victims have not been positively identified due to the extent of the condition of the body,” Sheriff Dale Wagner said in the press release on Friday.
A 28-year-old man identified as Mauricio Nava-Garibay is in custody for murder after being seen walking away from the gruesome crime scene. He reportedly told investigators that he had an argument with his girlfriend, Dora Martinez, at her home before luring her to a garage under the pretext of having a “gift” to offer him. He then stabbed her several times in the neck and chest, punched her in the face and strangled her with an extension cord, he told detectives, according to local media outlet KIMA-TV.
Another woman identified as Guadalupe Martinez is said to have entered the garage at the time, at which point Nava-Garibay pushed her onto the concrete floor and stabbed her in the back of the neck, according to multiple reports.
No further details were available on the relationship of the two women with the suspect.
“Investigations like this are very difficult and delicate. We appreciate any cooperation from our community, ”said Wagner.
