Did you bring your dashboard, honey? Because Our kind of people casts so much shadow and clapback that you’ve probably lost count of who had the upper hand.
They and Angela (Yaya DeCosta) weren’t playing dozens when Karin Gist and Lee Daniels’ rich and wicked drama premiered on Fox Tuesday, but they just might as well have been. There were so many people putting other people in their shoes, it was like a Real housewives dramatization.
And that’s the fun. Because while it’s fascinating to discover the one percent black who inhabit Martha’s Vineyard, it’s even more fun to see fictional versions of them bickering over the smallest things.
For starters, Angela is the daughter of a rich and powerful maid and mysterious man. And she moved to the Oak Bluffs area of the island (where the rich, black and fabulous reside and vacation) to find out who her father is. Angela, whose mother recently passed away, is also trying to start a hair care business based on her mother’s signature conditioner. Daughter Nikki (Alana Bright) and the sadly dubbed Aunt Piggy (Debbi Morgan) joined Angela on her journey to try and keep her focused and less in love with the glitz and glamor.
Leah (Nadine Ellis), meanwhile, is the guardian of a social club for women called the Gracities that Angela wants and must be a part of to ensure her professional success – but the two share more than just ambition. Teddy, Leah’s rich and charismatic father played by Joe Morton, is (unsurprisingly) also Angela’s father. Gasp! It’s a revelation that came at the end of the episode titled “Repairs” via flashbacks and the like.
Maybe the shared blood is the reason Leah felt so bad on the inside when she tore Angela apart at the Gracities afterparty and announced to a crowded room that Angela’s mom wasn’t not just a maid, she was a criminal who had been arrested for selling drugs. (Burn!) Although Leah was ashamed, her stepmom Olivia (L. Scott Caldwell) enjoyed every newsworthy moment.
Later, when Angela asked Leah to return the wig she had let her rock during the fashion show, Angela denounced Leah’s dry ends and called her a slave to wealth. (Clapback slap!) Leah’s daughter Lauren (Rhyon Nicole Brown) was mean to Nikki, and Nikki almost passed Lauren. Nikki also came out for Angela about being hypocritical and thirsty, but women and teenage girls weren’t the only ones ripping off edges and receipts.
Morton earned every penny and dollar of his salary – as usual – when he delivered a soliloquy that would have made Papa Pope proud. Much like this pope, Teddy blamed his daughter for trying to call him out on his unethical business practices.
There was a lot of stuff in the speech, because you know, Joe Morton, corn the highlights were something like, “A black man in America holding the American dream in my black hands… So don’t tell me you don’t like the dirt under my fingernails. You can keep your seat at the foot of this table. Never forget who’s in charge, little girl.
As you can imagine, this was the sickest burn of all. Even if you didn’t like Our kind of people, you should probably log in every week to see who Teddy is going to curse next because you know it’s happening and it’s gonna be great.
