Alex ovechkin is one of four Washington Capitals players on the list of NHL players who were not available to play or train on Wednesday under the League’s COVID-19 protocols.
Capitals center Evgeni Kuznetsov, defender, joins the 35-year-old left wing Dmitry Orlov and the keeper Ilya Samsonov.
On Wednesday, the NHL fined the Capitals $ 100,000 for player violations of the League’s COVID 19 protocols, which involved social interactions between team members who were in close contact and who were not wearing face cover.
“I regret my choice to spend time with my teammates in our hotel room and away from the locker rooms,” said the Capitals captain. “I will learn from this experience.”
In a statement, the Capitals revealed the incident involved players interacting in their hotel rooms during their season-opener four-game road trip.
“Our coaching staff have worked very hard to create a safe environment for our players and staff to compete this season,” the Capitals statement said. “We are disappointed with our players’ choice to interact in their hotel rooms and outside of team approved areas. We accept the NHL’s decision and will once again reiterate the COVID-19 protocols in place. to make sure players are in full compliance going forward. “
Washington (2-0-2) played its first four games this season on the road, last Thursday and Friday at the Buffalo Sabers, and Sunday and Tuesday at the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Capitals had a scheduled day off Wednesday and are scheduled to practice Thursday. Washington remains scheduled to open a six-game homestand on Friday against Buffalo.
Ovechkin has five points (one goal, four assists) in four games this season. The forward has scored 707 goals in the NHL, one behind Mike Gartner for the seventh in history.
Kuznetsov and Orlov have played four games. Samsonov and goalkeeper Vitek Vanecek have alternate starts.
Also on Wednesday, the NHL announced that all Carolina Hurricanes games have been postponed to at least Saturday after five players were placed on the COVID-19 protocol roster on Tuesday.
The NHL does not provide specific reasons for COVID-related absences or information on the length of a player’s absence.
Reasons for a COVID protocol absence may include: 1. An initial positive test that remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed according to the positive test protocol; 2. Mandatory isolation for symptomatic persons according to the positive test protocol; 3. Mandatory quarantine as high risk close contact according to positive test protocol; 4. Isolation based on a confirmed positive test result; and 5. Quarantine for travel or other reasons, as outlined in the COVID-19 protocol.
