The Washington Capitals hosted the Philadelphia Flyers for a very entertaining – if not very frustrating – Super Bowl Sunday morning.
Alex Ovechkin entered the scoreboard early and refused to exit. He scored on the power play and then set Tom Wilson up for a magnificent goal. Scott Laughton took over for the Flyers, scoring two goals in the second period.
Ovechkin responded with his second goal of the game, a shot from the blue line. But then the Flyers equalized (Robert Hagg), then took the lead (James van Riemdsyk), sending Vitek Vanecek off the net for the first time. Before the end of the second period, Alex Ovechkin found Nicklas Backstrom in the paint to tie him up again.
And then, in the first quarter of the third period, Sean Couturier put the lead back to Philly. Then Scott Laughton got the hat trick and then Sean Couturier hit an empty net.
The caps lose.
- Nick jensen had a monster first period, saving two almost certain goals with some formidable play on his side. He’s an underrated player in general, but we certainly heard his name at the start of it.
- And then we heard Alex ovechkin‘sitting on. With a monster individual performance, Ovechkin looked ten years younger. He scored two goals and created two more, showing himself big in a big game. Ian will have more on that, but I want to bring up that piece, where Ovi carried the puck into the zone, danced around Philippe Myers, and then set Tom Wilson up for a goal. Ovi used to make this move every game, but it was like 2009.

- On the other hand, Vitek Vanecek had a real stench, her first of the year. You can use your own math to correctly determine how many of those goals were on him, but in the end he gave up four goals on 14 shots – a save percentage of .710. Craig anderson makes its first in-game appearance for Embossed Caps. I have nothing to say about him except I think he’s a good guy.
- To the extent that today’s game was an entertaining blockbuster, that’s in large part because the Flyers managed to score a lot of goals with relatively few chances. The Caps had more of the puck and they did more with it, but it turned out to be a goal game.
- With the Caps down 5-4 in the third period, a human rumor Zdeno Chara got mistaken for a double minor for high sticking (for him: nipple sticking), forcing the large Caps PK unit to be awesome for four minutes. They were.
- I watched this whole game and still don’t know who Philippe Maillet is. The 28-year-old AHL player made his NHL debut today.

The Caps have lost three regulatory games in a row. They’ve got a few mondo games from their first row, but they just don’t have a full squad right now, either in the roster or in the performance of that roster. Cannot purchase a backup.
Huge disappointment.
