An argument over gifts at a baby shower in Pennsylvania this weekend escalated until the expectant father opened fire, injuring three people, including two teenagers, before being taken into custody in view, police said.

The Lower Burell Police Department, located in Westmoreland County, about 18 miles northeast of downtown Pittsburgh, said their officers were dispatched at 6:07 p.m. to the Kinloch Fire Department to report an active shooter inside the fire station. Upon arrival just four minutes later, officers located the suspected gunman outside the fire hall and took him into custody without incident.

“However, this was not an active shooter situation, but rather an isolated family incident at a baby shower,” the Lower Burell Police Department said.

The preliminary investigation shows that “a family dispute has started which has become physical,” the statement said. The suspect then introduced a semi-automatic 9mm handgun, firing shells. A 23-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman and a 16-year-old man were shot and wounded.

All the victims were transported to hospitals in the region. At a press conference, Lower Burrell Police Chief John Marhefka said none of the injuries sustained by the three victims appeared to be life threatening, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

Isiah Jumanne Hampton, 25, is charged with three counts of felony in the first degree of aggravated assault – attempting to cause significant bodily harm or causing injury with extreme indifference, as well as one count of felony in the second degree of aggravated assault – attempts to cause bodily harm with a lethal weapon and a misdemeanor count of recklessly endangering another person, according to court records.

In an arraignment hearing held virtually Sunday morning, Unity District Judge Michael Mahady set Hampton’s bail at $ 250,000. As of Sunday, Hampton was still being held at Westmoreland County Jail. Her next hearing is scheduled for September 28 before District Judge Cheryl Peck Yakopec.

A criminal complaint obtained by the Tribune-Review said Hampton had an argument with a woman at the baby shower who asked her to carry gifts after the party was over. It was not clear if the woman was the one carrying the baby the party was taking place for.

According to the complaint: Hampton allegedly “became abusive” towards the woman, who slapped him in the face. He then pushed the woman back and three men intervened. Hampton, who had fallen to the ground, pulled out a gun. As the other men fought over the gun, Hampton unloaded the handgun.

The 23-year-old victim was shot in the chest, while the 16-year-old boy was shot in the buttocks, according to the complaint. The 19-year-old, who wasn’t the woman Hampton was arguing with, suffered a scraped leg. Eventually, those at the party managed to grab Hampton’s handgun and place it on the bar as Hampton stepped out and the police arrived, according to the complaint.

The investigation is ongoing and is being managed by the Lower Burrell Police Department in conjunction with the Westmoreland County Detective Office.
