Packers demand DT Damon ‘Snacks’ Harrison on waivers before Week 17

In 2010, the Green Bay Packers claimed a big nose tackle in derogation. This player, Howard Green, ended up making a significant impact as a rotary player during the second half of the season and was partly responsible for a massive play in Super Bowl XLV. Green’s shot at quarterback Ben Roethlisberger forced a bad pass, which safety Nick Collins intercepted and came back for a touchdown.

It takes a long time for today’s listing transaction to have a similar impact as it did over a decade ago, but it’s not hard to imagine some similarities.

On Wednesday, the Green Bay Packers reportedly filed a waiver request against Damon “Snacks” Harrison, who was recently dropped by the Seattle Seahawks. According to the NFL deal thread, as reported by multiple media sources, the Packers will be awarded Harrison through the waiver process, as no other team with worse records has clearly made a claim.

There is some question as to whether Harrison chooses to play for the Packers, as he tweeted earlier today that he “won’t be claimed”. Moreover, he seems to want to choose his destination, because he said he would not “do the waiver thing. Harrison also turned down a Packers contract offer a few weeks ago while on the Seahawks’ practice squad, choosing instead to stay with Seattle for the stretch race. However, while he was in good health on match day Sunday, he requested his release, which the team granted on Tuesday.

Still, if he comes to Green Bay, he’ll join a team set to earn the NFC seed. Harrison was a full-time starter for seven years before not being signed as a free agent this spring. He played six games in Seattle in 2020, fielding about 35% of the team’s defensive snaps during those games. He recorded one forced fumble and nine tackles during that span, including six assists and one forced fumble in a game against the New York Jets in Week 14.

UPDATE: It looks like Harrison is ready to join the Packers after all. This Twitter exchange does indeed confirm that the Packers are one of the teams Harrison wants to play for:
