Aaron Rodgers has been at odds with the Green Bay Packers for most of the offseason, and at one point it looks like the Packers have been trying to fix the issue with their starting quarterback by offering him a lot of money.

According to The Athletic, the Packers were so desperate to work things out with Rodgers that they offered to make him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently revealed the duration of the offer – two seasons that would have kept the Packers quarterback in Green Bay for five more seasons. Rodgers would have been the highest-paid player in the NFL with his new contract, but the Packers quarterback declined the offer.

Green Bay would have been willing to give Rodgers over $ 45 million a year, which would have been a huge increase from the $ 21.5 million Rodgers is expected to earn this year ($ 14.7 million in salary plus $ 6.8 million bonus) QB paid is owned by Patrick Mahomes, who signed a 10-year, $ 450 million extension in July.

Now that Rodgers has declined the offer, where does that leave things between the star quarterback and the Packers? The reigning MVP still doesn’t know if we’ll show up when the Packers’ training camp begins next Tuesday.

“Well, I’m going to enjoy the hell this week,” Rodgers said last week at the American Century Championship. “And then I’ll get back to practicing and figuring things out in a few weeks.”

Since the end of January, it has been reported that Rodgers wanted the team to give him a new contract which would essentially ensure that he would retain the starting quarterback position beyond 2021. As it stands, the Rodgers’ deal is built in such a way to easily get rid of him after the 2021 season (The Packers would recoup around $ 22 million in cap space if they took him out after the upcoming season).

The Packers’ front office has been asked several times about the possibility of giving Rodgers a new contract during the offseason and each time they have danced around the matter. At the end of January, here’s what CEO Mark Murphy had to say when asked about Rodgers’ contract request.

“We’re not idiots,” Murphy said. “Aaron Rodgers will be back.”

This answer does not age so well.

At around the same time, general manager Brian Gutekunst said the team were delighted to have Rodgers on the team for “the years to come”.

“We are really excited not only for next year but for the years to come,” Gutekunst said in February.

After the draft was over, Murphy publicly admitted that the Packers were working on an issue with Rodgers, but he also added that he is considering the reigning MVP to be the team’s quarterback “in 2021 and beyond. “.

“This is an issue that we have been working on for several months,” Murphy said in a May 1 statement. “Brian Gutekunst, Matt LaFleur and I have flown a number of times to meet Aaron. We are very aware of Aaron’s concerns and have worked with him (and his agent Dave Dunn) to resolve them. We remain committed to Aaron. in 2021 and beyond.

The Packers have tried to mend the hurdles with Rodgers, but the MVP may be at his boiling point with the organization. We’ll see what Rodgers does when camp starts next week.
