The hosts of Top chef has taken to the streets of Houston to denounce Texas to this day.

Padma Lakshmi and Gail Simmons, who film the culinary competition in Texas, joined protesters at the Houston Women’s March on Saturday, October 2. The bill also requires private citizens to report those who assist a person to have an abortion.

While abortion is technically still legal in all 50 states, as it was under the law following Roe v. Wade of the Supreme Court in 1973, many feared that Texas’ latest abortion restriction could have major implications for abortion rights.

Lakshmi and Simmons spoke during the walk, with Lakshmi expressing gratitude that his own mother was able to have an abortion after she was born.

“At that time, not only could my parents not afford another child, but her body could not physically support another pregnancy,” Lakshmi told the crowd, according to Chron. “It was out of love for me that they made the difficult decision to do what was right for our family and it is out of love for my mother and all the families that I am here today, ready to fight . “

She then slammed Gov. Greg Abbott, saying of the Republican leader: “I think Abbott should follow Biology 101. I think he should understand how women’s bodies work, how reproductive cycles work and I thinks it should stay outside the body of women. You don’t have the right to decide what happens to my body.

Simmons also spoke out against the law and expressed concern that what happened in Texas could lead to more restrictive laws across the country.

“Texas has set a precedent and many states could partner with it if we don’t make it a national crisis issue and demand action at the highest level of justice,” Simmons said. “The best I can do is make sure people know where I stand and that I will support them. “

Simmons also shared a photo of herself wearing a “Bans Off Our Bodies” mask, as well as a 1973 T-shirt, to mark the Roe v. Wade.

Simmons captioned the photo, which showed a massive crowd gathered behind her: “Today we walked.”
