San Diego Padres teammates Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. were at the center of a row in the dugout in the fifth inning of Saturday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Video show Machado found himself facing Tatis, who walked away as Machado screamed. You could hear Machado say, “It’s not about you. It’s not you who cares ”, while his teammate Adam Frazier and a coach of the Padres pushed Tatis away from Machado.
Shortly before the showdown, Tatis took out sticks while watching and then challenged referee Phil Cuzzi’s appeal. Padres manager Jayce Tingler was kicked out when he stepped out to argue for Tatis.
“I’m sure people on the outside think that’s what they think, but we’re family,” Tingler said after the game. “We’re not going to discuss the details, but we care. There is passion, there is frustration. These are all emotions that are natural, and these things happen. But it boils down to one. group of caring men. “
Tingler said Machado has been doing a good job with leadership all season, and that he can share his experience of moving up in the league is a good thing. Machado is in his 10th MLB season while Tatis is in his third.
The Padres (76-72) lost 3-2 to the Cardinals. They have lost eight of their last 11 games and are now 2.5 games away from St. Louis for a wild card spot in the National League.
“I think any time the stakes are high and everyone knows what’s at stake, anything can happen,” Tingler said. “We may have disagreements, but we still love each other, we play for each other, we care for each other. And so when you have strong emotions on both sides, things happen.”
