17:43: Fortunately, it appears that switching from Pomeranz to IL is more cautious than a sign of long-term worry. Director Jayce Tingler told reporters (including Dennis Lin of Athletic), the team were hoping he would return in his first eligibility on July 17.
5:07 p.m .: The Padres announced they had placed the left-hander Blake snell on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 6, due to gastroenteritis. left-handed comrade Drew pomeranz moved to 10-day IL, retroactive to July 7, with inflammation of his throwing forearm. Right handed Miguel diaz was recalled from Triple-A El Paso, while righty Reiss Knehr (previously reported) has been officially selected to the Big League roster to start tonight’s game in place of Snell. To create a list of 40 players for Knear, right-handed Aaron Northcraft has been designated for assignment.
Snell has been bothered by stomach disease for over a week. He first landed on the IL on June 30, but returned to pitch four innings last Sunday. Snell has yet to fully recover, however, and he was unable to start tonight’s game. He will be eligible to return for next weekend’s series against the Nationals; with the All-Star Break coming up, it’s possible he’ll only miss tonight’s start.
Pomeranz’s injury seems a bit more of a concern, as any issue with a pitcher’s forearm figure can cause some alarm. There’s no indication at this point that the southpaw is facing any sort of extended absence, but that’s another issue in a season that hasn’t been kind to Pomeranz from a health standpoint. He had to deal with forearm strain during spring training and missed about six weeks between May and June due to shoulder and lat issues. That kept the star reliever to 17 innings this year, during which he worked at a 1.59 ERA with a strong strikeout rate of 31.4% and a high walk percentage of 12.9%.
The Padres picked Northcraft in late April, preparing the right-hander for his MLB debut at age 30. He allowed just two runs in his first eight innings in the Big League, but allowed eight walks while striking out just five. Northcraft didn’t have much success at Triple-A El Paso, working at an ERA of 8.10 by 13 1/3 frames. He did, however, induce Grounders on more than half of the balls in play against him at the Triple-A and MLB levels.
The Padres will have a week to trade Northcraft or expose it to waivers. If another team acquires it, it can be freely chosen for the remainder of the season.
