Panic sold 20,000 of its eccentric hand-cranked Playdate consoles in less than 20 minutes after opening preorders yesterday.
The company had committed to making a first batch of 20,000 units available in 2021 and, as confirmed by TechCrunch, sold that stock in record time.
It was still possible to order one of the Sunshine Yellow devices beyond that point, but those units won’t ship until 2022 at the earliest.
As some might have predicted, the pre-order rollout didn’t come without a hitch, and some international customers struggled to confirm their order after Panic’s international shipping provider plug-in went live. or collapsed under a heavy load.
Respond to affected people on Twitter, the company is committed to “finding the best plan for international orders delayed due to failures,” and said it was “absolutely amazed” at the response from its customers.
