Panthers’ Aaron Ekblad left the ice with a leg injury against Stars

Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad was stretchered off the ice in a spooky scene on Sunday as the team beat the Dallas Stars 4-1.

Ekblad was injured in the second half of the game after being punched in the corner by Stars player Esa Lindell. He writhed in pain and banged his hand on the ice as the medical staff attended to him.

“He played so many games while dominating defensively, but it’s his offensive contribution, joining the attack added a different dimension to our power play. You couldn’t ask for anything more,” said the Florida coach Joel Quenneville on Ekblad.

Quenneville said Ekblad is expected to miss an “extended time” with a leg injury and will be further evaluated on Monday.

Ekblad waved to the crowd as he was carried away.

“I just went to give him a hug, tell him to stay in there,” said Jonathan Huberdeau, moved. “In the third period we had to come out, play well and get the win for him.”

Huberdeau scored twice in the first period to help the Panthers claim victory.

Ekblad has scored 11 goals this season – tied for third among defenders. He scored the winning goal on Saturday against the Stars.
