NFL scouts spend months checking out draft prospects, but their fate can be summed up in moments with a head coach.
Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule recalled his own experience on Tuesday with a top prospect last year, where he said it took a simple lift to decide it wouldn’t be an ‘adjustment’ .
DESHAUN WATSON ASKS TEXAN TRADE: REPORT
“There was a player last year, and I won’t say who, but he was supposed to be very well written,” he told the Panthers website. “And I got in the elevator with him at the combine, and I thought at the end of that elevator ride, I was like, ‘There’s no way this guy is suitable for us. . ‘ ‘
Rhule said this year’s pandemic will make it even harder to find out about potential candidates because of the new limitations put in place – making the Scouts’ job even more difficult.
“It would be a year where everyone in the NFL knows less about the players than any other year,” he said. “We think we know these guys, and our scouts do a great job, but that’s just third-party information. It’s a chance for the players to speak for themselves and say: ‘This is who I am. This is what I propose to myself.’ “

“Coaching them, being in a meeting, just being in an elevator with them, you guys have meaning.”
The qualities Rhule looks for in a prospect are fairly straightforward.
“We are looking to find who is tough, hardworking and competitive, who is smart, who enjoys the game. And who is a good person. We spend six months a year together, so we want to be with people that we love and are suitable for us. . “

The Panthers finished the regular season 5-11, winning the 8th pick in the draft. Rhule said he is looking to strengthen the team’s attack and bring in young players.
The last time Carolina had the No.8 pick, they drafted running back Christian McCaffery in 2017.
