CHARLOTTE – The Panthers took a big step forward in stabilizing their offensive line on Tuesday.
The team placed the franchise tag on right tackle Taylor Moton, ensuring he will be there for at least one more season.
The label-backed one-year deal will pay Moton between $ 13 million and $ 14 million, depending on the final salary cap (which has not been finalized). The cap goes from $ 198.2 million to around $ 180 million this year, tightening things up in the NFL.
The team are still hoping to sign him for a long-term deal, and will be able to do so until July 15.
Moton, 26, has started every game in each of the past three seasons. Getting him back was crucial, as center Matt Paradis was the only other starter under contract.
Moton, a 2017 second-round pick from West Michigan, has played almost every snapshot during that span (missing six snaps in 2019, or 0.54% of the team’s total), and n ‘ was called to a single penalty last year.
The Panthers have also brought back reserve tackle Trent Scott and have Dennis Daley and Greg Little under contract with last year’s practice teams, but they’re obviously far from done setting the line up.
But they took the most important step, getting their best player.
Moton is the third offensive lineman the Panthers have scored in franchise history, and left tackle Jordan Gross and center Ryan Kalil have signed long-term deals with the team.
