Panthers trade for kicker Ryan Santoso

CHARLOTTE – The Panthers continue to lean into the kicking competition, adding another name to the mix on Thursday.

The Panthers traded a conditional seventh-round pick to the New York Giants for kicker Ryan Santoso. The seventh-round pick they owned was originally owned by the Dolphins, and will be the Titans or seventh-round Patriots higher next year (as long as Santoso plays in two games here).

The Panthers traded their own seventh round and lineacker Denzel Perryman to the Raiders on Wednesday in exchange for the sixth round in Las Vegas next year.

Santoso, 26, stood out in the Giants camp this summer, but was not going to overtake Graham Gano for the starting position.

He spent time with the Lions and Titans before his time with the Giants, spending last year on their practice squad. He first came to the league as an undrafted rookie from Minnesota (where he also punted).

The Panthers have brought in Dominik Eberle this week to compete with incumbent Joey Slye, who is going through what coaches here have described as a “crisis.”
