The parents of a 17-year-old girl who was found tied up and gagged at the back of a car in southern California told police Monday that they were there. They had taken him to a detoxification center in Mexico, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

They told police that they were driving the teenager to an addiction treatment center located south of the border, the San Diego Union-Tribune announced.

Smale told Union-Tribune that the 17-year-old had "admitted to using methamphetamine in the past year."

Officers took guard of the girl, according to the newspaper.

It is not known if father and daughter were arrested. Criminal charges against them are ongoing, Smale said.
