Fox News struck a deal with the parents of Seth Rich, an assassinated Democratic National Committee employee, who alleged in a lawsuit that the cable news company exploited their son’s death in stories and comments.
Both sides confirmed the settlement on Tuesday.
Rich was shot and killed in 2016 in Washington, DC, in what authorities described as a botched attempted robbery. His parents, Joel and Mary Rich, had objected to an article and comment by Fox falsely suggesting that their son leaked DNC emails to WikiLeaks during the presidential campaign.
Internet theories that Rich was murdered for leaking emails have been contradicted by U.S. intelligence reports.
A lower court had dismissed the lawsuit, but the U.S. Manhattan Second Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated it last year. The court said the family plausibly alleged what amounted to a campaign of emotional torture.
Rich’s parents, in a statement, said the colony closed another chapter in their efforts to mourn their son, who was 27 when he was killed.
“We are satisfied with the resolution of this matter and sincerely hope that the media will exercise real caution in the future,” said the Riches of Omaha, Nebraska.
Neither side has disclosed the financial terms of the deal.
“We are pleased with the resolution of the claims and hope it will allow Mr. and Mrs. Rich to find a small degree of peace and solace in the future,” Fox said in a statement.
