As the riders hit the first cobbles, it was Trek-Segafredo’s Lizzie Deignan who had a small gap over the rest of the peloton.

The riders reached the first cobbled section, Hornaing in Wandignies. From this point, the peloton will follow the exact course of the men’s race.

This race is as important for the runners as it is for the fans. Lizzie Deignan describes herself as a “fan” of the Paris Roubaix Women races.

The first lap of the Denain circuit is completed and the peloton is all together

We have a few new jerseys in the field today, starting with new world champion Elisa Balsamo as well as Ellen van Dijk in her European champion jersey and Canadian national champion Alison Jackson.

The race starts in Denain, south of Roubaix. The peloton will cover 115.6 km of kilometers before finishing in the emblematic Vélodrome de Roubaix. There are 17 cobblestone sectors where the cobblestone begins after only 20 km of racing.

Here we go ! The wheels are officially turning for the very first Paris Roubaix Femmes.

Jolien d’Hoore:

“For women’s cycling it is a bit historic day and for me personally it is also a special day. I think I can end my career in a pleasant way and I hope we can again show that we can have a good race for women’s cycling. ”

“It’s a great race, it has so much prestige and it’s a race I remember when I was a little girl. Also, it’s not that far from Belgium and I think it’s a course that really suits me, it’s flat and there are also cobblestones so I think it could be a great day for me. ”

How is Paris Roubaix different?

“It’s a race we’ve never had before. We’ve had cobblestone races but it’s the next level so I’m really looking forward to what it’s going to be today. It’s going to be tough, c safe for the whole body but I can’t wait. ”

“We had a lot of recognition with the team. I think we did six in total, and then we tested a lot of Specialized equipment, tires, wheels. We also have a special bike with suspension at front and rear. I think in terms of the equipment, we are rather well prepared, so now it’s on the legs. ”

“It’s been crazy all week with the media but it’s really cool and you can see it means a lot to a lot of people. Not just for the women but just a really big race and I’m really proud that we can make it happen. be a part now, hope we can make it a good day. ”

Annemiek van Vleuten before departure:

“I think it’s a historic moment, everyone will say that of course. It’s good that we can show today that we are difficult women that we can also compete in a race like Paris Roubaix. It’s a exploit I also think … I think that it will be the case very quickly to be reduced to a small group especially with the wind which will play also today. Already on the local turns there is a possibility for the echelons so it ‘ is a little sad that the television starts a little too late for that because there will be action after KM20. ”

On his hopes for his race:

“Having a small, small group would be better for me personally if the group was quickly reduced and we could then run from there. ”

There is also rain in the forecast, which means the cobblestones will be even more dangerous …
