Part of California freeway near Big Sur collapses into ocean

A significant portion of California’s Highway 1, which covers most of the length of the state’s Pacific coast, was washed away this week in a winter storm.

The California Department of Transportation’s Fifth District (Caltrans) tweeted a message on Friday warning drivers of the freeway closure due to a “partial wash” of the road.

The stretch of highway, located 15 miles south of Big Sur in Rat Creek, was destroyed following heavy rains.

Caltrans officials told CNN that the debris above the road “submerged drainage infrastructure, crossed the freeway and eroded the road, resulting in the complete loss of a segment of Route 1.”

Drone footage shared by Caltrans District 5 showed the extent of the damage.

Toks Omishakin, director of the California Department of Transportation, noted that it could be weeks before the portion of the freeway is repaired.
