Tens of thousands of people were without electricity in Manhattan on Saturday night, ConEdison said.

There were 45,000 customers without electricity in New York, most of them in Midtown Manhattan and in the Upper West Side, the electricity company announced.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was campaigning for the Iowa presidency, said it seemed that the blackout was the result of a mechanical problem of the power grid.

"It seems like something went wrong in the way they pass electricity from one part of the city to another," he told CNN. "Looks like it's addressable in a reasonable time."
