TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) – Authorities in California are investigating why a man found unconscious in a car had more than 300 unopened mail-in ballots for the gubernatorial recall election.
The man was arrested on August 16 after being found in the parking lot of a store in Torrance, police said.
Investigators from the Special Investigations Division of the Torrance Police Department, the US Postal Service and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Public Integrity Unit were trying to determine how the ballots ended up in the suspect’s vehicle and what his intention was to have them, police said in a statement on Facebook. On Monday.
Sgt. Mark Ponegalek told KABC-TV that the ballots had not been opened and had not been tampered with.
The man was a criminal with drugs, loaded gun, thousands of letters, a scale, and several California driver’s licenses and credit cards on behalf of others, police said.
The man, whose name has not been released, has been arrested on charges of weapons, narcotics and forgery violations.
Replacement ballots will be sent out, police said.
